Welcome to Your First Visit: What to Expect

We Make Getting Started Simple and Stress-Free

Choosing a new healthcare provider can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already dealing with pain or recovering from an injury. At Chiropractic Center of Delano, we’ve designed our new patient experience to be as comfortable and straightforward as possible. From your first phone call to your first adjustment, our friendly team will guide you through each step with clear communication and genuine warmth. We know that taking this first step toward feeling better requires trust, and we’re honored that you’re considering our practice for your chiropractic care.

One of the unique aspects of starting care with us is our commitment to making sure we’re the right fit for you before any financial commitment. We offer every new patient a complimentary initial examination because we want to determine whether we can truly help you with your specific condition.
This isn’t a brief consultation or a sales pitch—it’s a thorough 30 to 45-minute evaluation where Dr. Cunanan will take the time to understand your health history, perform comprehensive testing, and give you honest feedback about whether chiropractic care is appropriate for your situation. We’ve actually referred patients to other specialists when we’ve determined that chiropractic wasn’t the right solution, because your wellbeing matters more to us than adding another patient to our schedule.

Before Your First Appointment

To make your first visit as efficient as possible, we ask that you bring a few items with you. Please bring your insurance card and a valid California driver’s license or ID. If you have previous medical records, X-rays, or MRI results related to your current condition, those can be helpful but aren’t required. We’ll have you arrive about 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment time to complete some initial paperwork, though we’re happy to send this to you in advance if you’d prefer to fill it out at home. Our team speaks English, Spanish, and Tagalog, so please let us know if you’d be more comfortable conducting your appointment in Spanish or Tagalog—we want you to fully understand everything we discuss.

Don’t worry about wearing anything special to your appointment, though we do recommend comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Dr. Cunanan will need to observe your posture and movement patterns, so clothing that’s too restrictive might make the examination more difficult. Most importantly, come prepared to be an active participant in your care—we’ll be asking questions about your symptoms, your health history, and your goals for treatment, so the more information you can share, the better we can customize your care plan.

Your Comprehensive First Examination

During your initial visit, Dr. Cunanan will spend quality time getting to know you and your unique situation. He’ll start with a detailed consultation about your current symptoms, when they started, what makes them better or worse, and how they’re affecting your daily life. This conversation helps him understand not just what hurts, but how that pain is impacting your work, your activities, and your overall quality of life. Many patients tell us they appreciate that Dr. Cunanan truly listens without rushing through the appointment—that’s because we schedule adequate time for each patient rather than booking back-to-back appointments every few minutes.

After the consultation, Dr. Cunanan will perform a thorough physical examination that includes orthopedic testing, neurological assessment, and evaluation of your muscle balance and flexibility. This is where our approach differs significantly from many other practices—we don’t just look at the area that hurts. Dr. Cunanan tests your entire kinetic chain, identifying muscle imbalances, areas of hypertonicity that need stretching, and areas of weakness that need strengthening. This comprehensive assessment allows him to address the root cause of your pain rather than just treating symptoms. If X-rays are needed, we can take them right here in our office during your first visit, eliminating the need for you to travel to another facility and wait for results.

Getting Care on Day One

Unlike many chiropractic offices that require you to come back for a separate report of findings appointment before receiving any treatment, Dr. Cunanan typically provides your first adjustment during your initial visit—as long as the examination shows that it’s safe and appropriate to do so. Most patients are eager to start feeling better, and there’s no reason to make you wait if we can help you right away. The first adjustment may be gentler while we’re still learning how your body responds, but you’ll leave knowing that your healing journey has already begun.

After your adjustment, Dr. Cunanan will discuss his findings with you in detail. He’ll explain what he discovered during the examination, what he believes is causing your pain, and what he recommends for your treatment plan. This is also when we’ll discuss the financial aspects of your care—whether your insurance will cover treatment, what your out-of-pocket costs might be, and what payment options are available to you. If you qualify for our financial hardship program, we’ll discuss that privately and respectfully. We never want cost to be the reason someone continues suffering, so we work with patients to find solutions that fit their budget.
